Este tipo de copas son piezas formadas por una concha de nautilo, molusco procedente de Indonesia, engastadas en una montura de plata sobredorada. A partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI fueron objetos de lujo muy apreciados. En esta pieza, en concreto, la concha es sujetada por un sátiro que ejerce como vástago y que la carga sobre su espalda. A modo de remate, se representa a Neptuno montado a lomos de un animal fantástico con cola de pez en cuya mano derecha se observa un pequeño agujero donde probablemente se sostenía un tridente, hoy perdido. Esta obra la adquirió el barón Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza en 1988.

Cups of this kind are made out of the shell of a nautilus – a mollusc from Indonesia – set in a silver gilt mount. They became highly coveted luxury items in the second half of the 16^thcentury. Here the stem is in the form of a satyr supporting the shell on his back. The cup it is topped with Neptune riding a fantastical animal with a fish’s tail. The small hole visible in his right hand probably indicates that he once held a trident, now lost. This piece was acquired by Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza in 1988.
