As a museum, we play a key role in promoting values and raising awareness of the challenges and problems faced by society. In this section, we highlight our commitment to environmental responsibility and ESG (environmental, social and governance) criteria as an essential part of our ethical governance.

#UnitedforBiodiversity
We joined the #UnitedforBiodiversity Global Coalition to raise awareness of the need to protect biodiversity ahead of the COP15 meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2021. We are committed to continuing our work in this field.
A museum committed to its visitors and employees
Crafts and sustainability in our shop:
- Increased number of craft and sustainable products.
- Plastic-free product packaging and use of recycled materials.
- Collaboration with the brand Ecoalf.
- Recycled and/or sustainable paper for graphic materials in exhibitions, in collaboration with TBA21.
Energy efficiency measures:
- Replacement of halogen lights with LED spotlights in room lighting.
- More efficient climate control systems.
- Scheduled on and off times for lighting and installation of motion detectors.
- Water-saving aerators in washbasins and installation of water heaters in toilets.
- Reuse of boxes for transporting works from the collection.
Employee awareness:
The Thyssen ECO programme features initiatives to promote and raise museum employees’ awareness of social responsibility and improving the environment:
- Eco-Healthy Week: we ran a Route of the Senses workshop to raise awareness of eco-healthy eating habits.
- Since 2019 we have handed out fresh fruit.
- Since 2023 we have played an active role in Sanitas’ Healthy Cities campaign. This initiative encourages physical activity among staff while contributing to tree planting and the reforestation of urban areas.
- We took part in the clothing collection campaign run by the NGO Opción 3 Iniciativa Social. This initiative highlights the importance of reducing and reusing textile waste.
- We send employees informational and awareness messages on various topics such as healthy eating, cutting down on the use of paper, recycling, etc.
