Set in Singapore during the 1997 financial crisis in Asia, Ilo Ilo recounts the daily drama of the Lim family, comprising the troubled primary school student Jiale and his stressed parents, Heck and Leng. Representatives of the prosperous middle class and with another baby on the way, the Lims hire Teresa, a Filipino immigrant who is struggling to find her place in her new community, as a live-in maid and nanny. 

This first feature film by Singaporean film director, screenwriter and producer Anthony Chen (born 1984) earned him the Camera d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, making him the first and only Singaporean to win an award at that festival. It also received the Achievement in Directing award at the 2013 Asia Pacific Screen Awards and the Golden Horse award for Best Feature Film, Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay.
