Focus on the Work. Fishing Party on Long Island Sound off New Rochelle
The museum is offering Friends the chance to learn in depth about Fishing Party on Long Island Sound off New Rochelle, painted in 1847 by the American artist James Goodwyn Clonney. During this in-gallery session lasting 45 minutes participants will share their thoughts, ideas and interpretations with the help of Alba Campo Rosillo, co-curator of the exhibition American Art from the Thyssen Collection.
At the period when he executed this work Clonney was interested in representing profoundly serious themes such as slavery in the USA and its resulting violence. Bearing this in mind, the session will focus on the issues of genre painting, the art market, the work’s historical context and other aspects that will reveal the enigmas of this fascinating painting, facilitating dialogue among participants.
