The restoration process of Natalia Goncharova’s Fishing (Fishers)
Fishing (Fishers) was painted by Natalia Goncharova in 1909 and makes up part of the collection’s works by the Russian avant-garde artists. The Restoration Department of the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum initially took on this painting to be cleaned, but during the process discovered that part of the picture had been folded back and hidden behind what turned out to be a newer frame.
The restoration process included the recovery and restoration of the edges of the painting that had been concealed for decades, the changing of the frame to one of the correct size, and the recovery of the existing inscriptions in the original wooden slats which in turn were attached to the new ones.
