This is the first retrospective exhibition of the work of the French painter Henri Fantin-Latour to be held in Spain. It was jointly organised with the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, where it could be seen from 26 June to 6 September 2009. An artist of the generation of Manet, Degas and Whistler, Fantin-Latour (Grenoble, 1836 – Buré, 1904) shared many of their ideas but for various complex reasons had not been considered one of the great pioneers of modern art. The present exhibition aimed to rectify that position and presented a comprehensive selection of more than 70 oil paintings and drawings representing the finest examples of his work, loaned from museums and collections worldwide.
