Museums Day and Night

To mark International Museums Day and Night, both of which fall on the same day this year as 18 May is a Saturday, the museum is opening free of charge from 10am to 1am, offering visitors the opportunity to see both the permanent collection and exhibitions such as Balthus and Amar Kanwar and the special displays Women Pioneers, Discovering Caravaggio, Reality and Devotion and Doña Francisquita, a Woman of the Zarzuela.

Within the context of this celebration and with the hashtag #thelightofpainting, from 15 to 19 May and Sponsored by Endesa there is the chance to enjoy a virtual reality experience and get inside various paintings through immersive glasses that make it possible to wander through the meadows of Auvers as painted by Van Gogh and the streets of New York that inspired Mondrian, or to delve into the flowers and insects of a Dutch still life. These same paintings are the subject of a video mapping which will take place in the Main Hall with projections that reveal amazing details and viewpoints. Finally and also between these dates, screens located in the galleries of the permanent collection will show 12 paintings reproduced through a 3-D video system.

• 3-D videos (permanent collection galleries): Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 10.00 to 19.00 and Saturday from 10.00 to 1.00 (free entry only on Saturday).
