Van Gogh Worldwide

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza has joined Van Gogh Worldwide, an innovative online platform offering a wealth of art-historical and material-technical information about the works of Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890). Van Gogh Worldwide is an initiative of the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the Kröller-Müller Museum, and the Van Gogh Museum, and is supported by the Vincent van Gogh Foundation and the Mondriaan Fund.

For the first time, all of the data on Van Gogh’s artworks in museums, institutions and private collections across the world is being brought together, making this an invaluable tool for research into the work of this world-famous artist. In total, there are about 2000 known paintings, drawings and prints by Van Gogh. Van Gogh Worldwide already contains data on more than 1100 of these in Dutch collections. Since the beginning of 2022, the platform has been adding information on works in international collections, where they are looked after by nearly 200 institutions and private individuals.

The department of Modern Painting at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza has revised and shared its research data on the Van Gogh works in its collections. The following works are now accessible:

The Van Gogh Worldwide platform incorporates photographs of each artwork, as well as object data, provenance information, exhibition and literature data, letter references and material-technical information. This is presented as Linked data and is therefore always up to date. The website makes it easy to search by subject, material or date, and to view several artworks side by side and compare data – a huge improvement for researchers.
