Saint Casilda (ca.1630-35) by Francisco de Zurbarán and The Virgin and Child with Saint Rose of Viterbo (ca. 1670) by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo are the subject of December’s edition of Focus on the Work, an in-person activity exclusively for Friends which allows participants to share impressions, thoughts and ideas on works in the collection.

On this occasion María Eugenia Alonso, curator of Old Master Painting, will draw parallels between the two saints and analyse how Murillo and Zurbarán, two of the great figures of the Spanish Golden Age, approached this religious subject matter, the pictorial techniques they employed and the context in which these works were created.
