Carbon footprint
Since 2022, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza has calculated its carbon footprint in accordance with the international Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) standard across Scopes 1, 2 and 3. In 2023, it completed its registration with the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO).
Total emissions by scope. tCO₂e emissions
The emission factors (EFs) used are taken from official sources such as MITECO, DEFRA (UK Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs), OCCC (Catalan Office for Climate Change), REE (Spanish Power Grid), Metro de Madrid and others. If EFs are not available from the main sources, estimates have been made based on relevant studies.
Emissions from electricity consumption (Scope 2) are 0, as the museum’s energy comes from 100% renewable sources.

In addition, the following indicators have been calculated to enable annual carbon footprint comparisons and assessments.

Annually comparable intensity indicators
The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza’s carbon footprint was 32% higher in 2023 than in 2022. It should be noted that the 2023 figure included the movement of artworks from the collection on loan to China (including the transport of artworks and travel and hotel stays of employees responsible for supervising the transport, installation and dismantling of works).
